Okayama University Students Participate in the 19th ASEAN and 9th ASEAN+3 Youth Cultural Forum, an Exchange Event Through Asian Arts and Culture

July 05, 2024

From June 23 to 28, students from Okayama University attended the event held at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam. This forum, organized annually by the ASEAN University Network (AUN) and its members from Japan, China, and South Korea, provides a platform for students to engage in cultural exchange through arts and culture, learn about the diversity and commonalities of ASEAN and East Asian cultures, and showcase traditional cultural expressions.

The event featured lectures by university faculty, cultural exchanges among participants, visits to local Bruneian traditional cultures and cultural resource sites, as well as main events such as exhibitions and performances showcasing the cultures of each participating country.

Representing Okayama University, Mr. ITO Koyo, Ms. OKADA Nanoha, and Ms. TAKEGAWA Airi from the Discovery Program for Global Learners (GDP) 2nd year, presented Japanese tea ceremony and calligraphy in traditional attire. Amidst performances of dance and music, their demonstration of the delicacy and strength of "quiet" culture of etiquette and manners received high praise from participants. Mr. Ito commented, "We experimented within our group on how best to express the delicacy and strength of Japanese culture. I hope to further explore Japanese culture and develop means to represent it on a global stage."

Okayama University, which belongs to the National Six Universities (Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, Okayama University, Nagasaki University, and Kumamoto University), and AUN have actively fostered student exchanges and co-hosted academic seminars for nearly a decade. Further promotion of exchange through this network is expected in the future.
