An Invitation to join the World Archaeological Congress
You are invited to join the World Archaeological Congress ...
The World Archaeological Congress (WAC) is an international forum for discussion for anyone who is genuinely concerned with the study of the past. WAC is based on the need to recognise the historical and social role and political context of archaeology, and the need to make archaeological studies relevant to the wider community.
The World Archaeological Congress has particular interest in
- education about the past
- archaeology and indigenous people
- the ethics of archaeological enquiry
- the protection of sites and objects of the past
- the effect of archaeology on host communities
- the ownership, conservation and exploitation of the archaeological heritage
- application of new technologies in archaeology and in archaeological communication
The World Archaeological Congress also seeks to promote interest in the past in all countries, to encourage the development of regionally based histories and international academic interaction. WAC has already established a number of different regular activities, including International Conferences and Publications.
WAC ACTIVITIES
Founded in 1987, the World Archaeological Congress has already established a number of different regular activities. WAC members accept the terms of the Vermillion Accord adopted in 1990.
International conferences
WAC holds a major congress every four years covering a wide variety of regional and archaeological topics. WAC international conferences have been held in the United Kingdom, Venezuela, and India.
WAC also sponsors international Inter-Congresses which emphasise a particular theme of archaeological importance. The first, in the USA, covered the topic of Archaeological Ethics and the Treatment of the Dead. The second, in Kenya, dealt with the development of Urbanism in Africa. Others are being planned.
WAC also sponsors sessions and workshops at other archaeological meetings in many countries. Most recently WAC was co-sponsor of a workshop on Tropical Archaeology, held in Puerto Rico, and also provided computer equipment and conducted computing courses in India and Romania.
Publications
The World Archaeological Bulletin, an occasional journal of news and papers concerned with the Congress' special issues, is soon in its seventh issue.
A WAC Newsletter facilitates more regular communication.
Nearly thirty books derived from the WAC I and 2, have been issued between 1988 and 1991 in the One World Archaeology series edited by Peter Ucko and published by Unwin Hyman and now by Routledge. This well received and on-going series provides some of the most up-to-date material available on important topics.
WAC ORGANISATION
WAC aims to be democratic and is truly international, having its executive and policy-making bodies elected by its Membership.
Executive
The Executive administers the affairs of the World Archaeological Congress. It consists of two representatives from each of the 14 regions. The members of each region elect, by postal ballot, a junior and senior representative. The representatives are in office for eight years, with half standing for election every four years to maintain continuity.
In addition to the archaeologists, the Executive includes eight representatives of peoples appointed by indigenous organisations.
The Executive meets during the International Congresses and Inter-Congresses and at other times when necessary.
Council
The Council is the policy-making body of WAC. It is formed for the duration of each of the International Congresses and consists of a representative from every country attending the Congress and all members of the Executive.
Officers
A President, Secretary, and Treasurer are elected by Council and hold office until the following council meeting. Current officers are Bassey Andah (President, Nigeria), Julian Thomas - jst@soton.ac.uk (Secretary, U.K.), and Robin Torrence robint@amsg.austmus.oz.au - (Treasurer, Australia).
World Archaeological Congress Membership
The World Archaeological Congress is not intended to compete with existing organisations, but draws its membership from a wide range of people with a commitment to its aims, as well as from the academic community.
