A Collaborative Research on Cultural Exchange between East and West and Cultural Translation

This collaborative study investigates diverse forms of East-West cultural interaction (primarily between Japan and Europe) through not only textual translation but cultural “translation”, which encompasses the entire phenomenon of culture. The study aims to consider problems of transplantation, reception, and transformation via a multi-layered approach that takes into account thought, history, and literature. (NAGASE Haruo)

Modern Asian Culture and Concepts of Representation

This study focuses on Asian (Japanese, Chinese, Southeast Asian) modernity, which has assumed strong individualist characteristics due to interactions with Western “modernity.” The study aims to illuminate the process by which a new culture of representation is taking shape in the unfolding drama of Asian “modernity,” and also to bring to light the actual features of this process.
