神経細胞の障害・変性とそれに対する保護・修復・再生方策を見出すことを目指して，神経変性疾患モデルの病態解析と新しい治療法の開発，グリア細胞の機能局在，神経外脳内環境の修飾，神経細胞分化に関わる遺伝子発現調節，超らせんDNA結合蛋白，シナプス蛋白の機能解析といった多角的な視点からのアプローチで，基礎と臨床を繋ぐ研究を行います．
