Scholarships for the Financial Support of International Students

There are a variety of scholarships to support financially international students. Applicant eligibility and the number recruited vary according to the scholarship. Recruitment information is posted on bulletin boards at each faculty and Center for Global Partnerships and Education as well as this website. Okayama University international students applying for a scholarship who have attendedthe "Campus Life Orientation for New Students" held by the Center for Global Partnerships and Education will be given priority over the international students who have NOT attended the "Campus Life Orientation for New Students."

1.Applicant Eligibility (excluding Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) scholarships)

 Applicants should meet all of the conditions below.

  ①The period of having been enrolled at the current course should not exceed the period of the course term at the time of application.
  ②Applicant’s GPA of the previous academic year should meet the required grade point average:
  undergraduates: 2.3 and above
  graduate students: 2.3 and above
  ③Applicants should not be receiving or be selected to receive, or have applied for any other scholarships.
  ④Annual income of the financial supporter should less than ¥5,000,000.
  ⑤Applicant’s spouse is not a recipient of Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) scholarship or Interexchange Association Japan (IAJ), nor a sponsored student of foreign government.
  ⑥Monthly stipend of the scholarship should not exceed ¥30,000 per month if the applicant’s spouse receives or will receive any scholarship or grant.
  ⑦Applicants should meet any other requirements specified by the sponsor specifies.

 ※The term “spouse” here includes a partner of a de facto marriage

2. Application  

Follow the application procedures for each scholarship. Applicants at Tsushima campus or Shikata campus submit the required documentation to the Center for Global Partnerships and Education of their campus. Applicants at other campuses should submit the required documents to the Academic Affairs office of that campus. Recruitment information is posted on bulletin boards at each faculty and Center for Global Partnerships and Education as well as this website. Download the application form at this website and submit the necessary documents to the Center for Global Partnerships and Education by due date.

Late applications cannot be accepted for any reason.

3. Scholarship Selection Criteria

Scholarship candidates applying through the university are selected based on “the Scholarship Guidelines for Privately Funded International Students.

Scholarship candidates are selected based on: 1. Academic performance; 2. Economic situation; 3. Grade year; 4. Personal (have they received any disciplinary action, have they violated immigration control laws, have they violated any other rules); 5. Whether or not having received any scholarship in the previous year.

4. Note

① Those who are waiting for the result for the scholarship cannot apply for any other scholarship.
Refer to the scholarship list and choose one.

② Please understand any willful false statement is sufficient cause for cancellation and return of the scholarship.

③ If you are selected as a recipient of a scholarship for which you have applied directly to the sponsor, please report this to the Center for Global Partnerships and Education. Discovery of failure to report has serious consequences: you will not be able to apply for any scholarship through the university and you may be asked to return the scholarship.

1) Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship

 Included under this category are privately financed students currently studying at Japanese universities. Qualified are third-year undergraduates expected to advance to fourth-year regular student status (fifth-year status in the case of medical, dental or veterinary students or those majoring in 6-year system pharmaceutical sciences), fourth year students expected to advance to regular Master's program student status, or Master's or Doctoral students expected to remain as regular students for one year or longer. Awarding of scholarships to undergraduates has been suspended since 2010.
 The recruitment is to be announced late September through the faculty or graduate school. The application deadline is the beginning of November. Those interested in applying should consult with the person responsible in their department administration office.

2) JASSO Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students (“学習奨励費 Gakushu-Shoreihi”)

 Applicants with excellent academic records and personal achievements selected. A monthly stipend of 48,000 yen is provided for successful applicants for one year. This is the best scholarship in the number of the recipients, but also the most competitive. Recruiting period is between the beginning and the middle of April. Application deadline is around at the end of April.
