Scholarships, Exemption from Admission and/or Tuition Fees, and Postponement of Collection of Admission and/or Tuition Fees
There are a variety of scholarships available for international students who require financial assistance. The number of eligible and successful applicants varies according to the scholarship. Recruitment information on the scholarships is posted on the bulletin boards at each faculty and at the Center for Global Partnerships and Education, as well as on this website.
Criteria for Eligible Applicants (excluding Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) scholarships)
Eligible applicants should meet all of the criteria listed below.
- The enrollment period in the current course should not exceed the course term period at the time of application.
The applicant’s GPA of the previous academic year should meet the required grade point average:
Undergraduates: 2.0 and above
Graduate students: 2.3 and above
- The applicant should not be currently receiving or be selected to receive, or have applied for any other scholarships.
- The annual income of the financial supporter should be less than ¥5,000,000.
- The applicant’s spouse is not a recipient of a Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) scholarship or Interexchange Association Japan (IAJ), nor a sponsored student of a foreign government.
- The monthly stipend of the scholarship should not exceed ¥30,000 per month if the applicant’s spouse receives or will receive any scholarship or grant.
- The applicant should meet all other requirements specified by the sponsor.
※The term “spouse” here includes a partner of a de facto relationship.
All applicants must follow the application procedures for each scholarship. Applicants at the Tsushima campus or Shikata campus should submit the required documentation to the Center for Global Partnerships and Education of their campus. Applicants at other campuses should submit the required documents to the Academic Affairs Office of that campus. Recruitment information on the scholarships is posted on the bulletin boards at each faculty and at the Center for Global Partnerships and Education, as well as on this website. Please download the application form from this website, and submit the necessary documents to the Center for Global Partnerships and Education by the due date.
Late applications cannot be accepted for any reasons.
Scholarship Selection Criteria
Scholarship candidates applying through the university are selected based on the Scholarship Guidelines for Privately Funded International Students.
Scholarship candidates are selected based on: 1. Academic performance; 2. Grade year; 3. Behavior (adherence to the immigration control laws and any other rules); 4. Whether or not he/she received any scholarship in the previous year.
- Candidates who are waiting for the result of their scholarship application cannot apply for any other scholarship.Please refer to the scholarship list below, and choose one that best suits your requirements.
- Please understand that any willfully false statement is sufficient cause for cancellation and return of the scholarship.
- If you are selected as a recipient of a scholarship for which you have applied directly to the sponsor, please report this to the Center for Global Partnerships and Education. There are serious consequences if it is discovered that you have failed to disclose such information; namely, you will not be able to apply for any scholarship through the university, and you may be asked to return the scholarship you are receiving.

1) Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship

Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarships (PDF:369KB)
Included in this category are privately financed students currently studying at Japanese universities. Eligible applicants are third-year undergraduate students who are expected to advance to a fourth-year regular student status (fifth-year status in the case of medical, dental or veterinary students or those majoring in 6-year system pharmaceutical sciences); fourth year students expected to advance to a regular Master's program student status, or Master's or Doctoral students expected to remain as regular students for one year or longer. Scholarships are no longer awarded to undergraduate students since 2010.
The recruitment period will be announced in late September through the relevant faculties and/or graduate schools. The application deadline is the beginning of November. Students who are interested in applying should consult with the person(s) responsible for scholarship applications in their department administration office.
2) JASSO Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students (“学習奨励費 Gakushu-Shoureihi”)
Successful applicants are selected based on their excellent academic record and personal achievements, and they receive a monthly stipend of 48,000 yen (graduate and undergraduate students) for one year. The recruitment period is between the beginning and middle of April, and the application deadline is at the end of April.

Tuition / Admission Fee Exemption
Exemption from admission and/or tuition fees, and postponement of collection of admission fee.
Okayama University has a system for waiving all or half of the admission and/or tuition fees, or postponing the collection of admission fee. This system is available for regular students (undergraduate and graduate) who have severe difficulty paying their admission and/or tuition fees because of exceptional circumstances, and who are recognized as producing excellent academic results. To apply for this system, please submit an application during the designated period to the Student Support Division.
