Okayama University Yacht Club Qualifies for the All Japan Sailing Championships

October 25, 2021

On October 9 and 10, the Okayama University Yacht Club participated in the 71st Chugoku Regional Student Yacht Championships (Chugoku Intercollegiate), which took place at Hiroshima Kanon Marina in Hiroshima Prefecture. As a result of achieving first place in the International 470 Class, the club will represent Chugoku Regional Universities at the 86th All Japan Yacht Championships (All Japan Intercollegiate) in November.

There were two classes in the regional championships; the International 470 Class and the International Snipe Class. Each university could have three boats representing them in the team events, with an aim to score the lowest number of points overall. Four regional universities took part in the International 470 Class; namely, Okayama University, Hiroshima University, Hiroshima Shudo University, and Yamaguchi University. The Okayama University team came first in all of their races on the first day, resulting in an eleven-point lead over the second-place team from Hiroshima University. They maintained their lead in the race held on the second day, winning an impressive victory and securing their place in the All Japan Intercollegiate Championships.

Five universities participated in the International Snipe Class and though the Okayama University team were able to come in second place behind Hiroshima University, they unfortunately missed out on a spot in the upcoming national championships.

Commenting on his team’s victory, International 470 Class team leader NISHI Takahiro (fourth year, Faculty of Engineering) said, ‘I am pleased that we came first place in the Chugoku Intercollegiate Championships and even more delighted that we will be able to take part in the All Japan Championships. But our goal is to achieve good results at the national championships, so we will keep that in mind as we train.’ Additionally, Team Captain KUSAMOTO Ryo (fourth year, Faculty of Economics) commented, ‘Only the 470 team will be taking part in the All Japan Intercollegiate Championships in Aichi Prefecture. I would like to thank the alumni that came to support us during our practice sessions, as well as the team coach and organizer. I hope that the 470 team will continue to do their best, not only for their sakes, but for the sake of the Snipe team that will not have the chance to compete in the All Japan Championships. We will post the results of the races for the national championship in real time on Facebook, and would be grateful for everyone’s support.’
