Sending Students Overseas for the First Time in Three Years! School of Engineering’s Short Term Overseas Study (HUG) Program Held

September 06, 2022

With the aim of developing human resources who can play an active role in the international community, the School of Engineering has independently planned and implements a short term overseas study program (HUG: Hatch Under the Global society) for third year students of the School of Engineering. In 2020 and 2021, the international exchange program was held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the impact of COVID-19 continuing in 2022, undergraduate students were sent to the University of Rhode Island in the US for a three-month period from June to August, with measures in place to prevent COVID-19 infection. The participating students were assigned to a laboratory at the university, and undertook research activities under the instruction of professors and graduate students. On the weekends, they broadened their horizons with visits to major cities such as Boston, New York and Chicago.

SUGIMURA Naoki, a third year School of Engineering student who participated in the program, commented that, “I learned the importance of acting independently through the exchange.” Students were able to broaden their horizons by actually carrying out research activities in America.

The School of Engineering will implement the program next year as well, with the aim of enhancing its global education.

Students who participate in the international program will earn credits. It is also possible to apply for a scholarship.
