Mr. TOKUDA Teruaki, a 2nd-year student majoring in practical teaching at the Graduate School of Education, participated in the "39th Genon Composition Rookie Award Selection", a contest that is said to be the gateway to success for young composers, and won the award.
The theme for this year's competition was "string ensemble", and there were 34 entries from Japan and overseas. Mr. Tokuda's work passed the first round of judging by music score examination and participated in the finals. The final was held on December 5th at the Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall. Mr. Tokuda performed "Roots by Arcangelo Corelli," a piece he wrote especially for this competition, and won the award. This work features a melody composed by A. Corelli (1653-1713), a composer who lived more than 300 years ago. The work is characterized by its bold allusion to the "heritage" of traditional music and its fresh sound in the world of contemporary music, which tends to seek a brand-new sound.
This competition is sponsored by Japan Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM Japanese Section), and this year is the 39th. Many university professors and world-renowned Japanese composers have participated in this competition in the past, and it remains one of the most notable competitions of its kind.
Upon receiving the results, Mr. Tokuda commented, "In addition to myself, the winners this time include a composer who graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, a current composition student at the Toho Gakuen School of Music, and an active Japanese composer at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg (France), and all of works were very inspiring. I would like to continue my activities as a composer as long as possible, and at the same time, I would like to pass on what I have learned to children as a teacher."
