January 06, 2023

On November 6, the 56th All Japan Student Tournament of Shorinji Kempo was held at the Nippon Budokan. In the main tournament, kyu-kenshi and yudan-kenshi were divided into individual, team, and group performances, and competed for ranking.
From our university's Shorinji Kempo club, the pair of TAKEDA Ren (1st year, School of Economics) and EMOTO Mariko (1st year, Faculty of Law) competed in the free kumi demonstration, men's and women's white-green belt division, with a total of 15 pairs competing to advance to the finals. The result was a loss in the qualifying round, but the pairs competed enthusiastically against their rivals at the national level.
Reflecting on the tournament, Mr. Takeda said, “I am a beginner who started Shorinji Kempo after becoming a university student, but I was deeply moved by the fact that I was able to perform in the historical venue of Nippon Budokan. I was able to experience the high level of the national team and realize my lack of ability, and I was able to motivate my future practice by seeing the appearance of my rivals. I would like to make the most of this valuable experience and use it for next year's competition."
On December 4, the 12th Chushikoku Student Winter Tournament of Shorinji Kempo was held at Kagawa University. A total of 14 universities participated, and the pair of HIRAOKA Miu (1st year, Faculty of Law) and OKAZAKI Chihiro (1st year, School of Letters) took 3rd place in the women's white-green belt division of the kumi demonstration, and EMOTO Mariko (1st year, Faculty of Law) took 2nd place in the individual demonstration of the white-green belt division.
Looking back on the competition, the captain YOSHIDA Airi (3rd year, Faculty of Environmental Science and Technology) commented, "This was the second competition for the first-year students, and each of them made time to practice on their own. At the tournament, I was able to feel the growth of not only the members who won the prize, but also the members who had a frustrating experience. I myself will continue to work hard every day without letting up." with enthusiasm for the future.
