Weight Training Club Wins Individual and Team Runner-Up at All-Japan Powerlifting Championships Held in Okayama!

January 10, 2023

On December 25, the 49th All Japan Powerlifting Championships for the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Cup was held at Zip Arena Okayama, where 93 athletes from 17 universities who had advanced from the regional qualifiers competed fiercely.
17 members of our university's weight training club competed in the event. FUJII Saki (4th year, Faculty of Law) in the women's 52kg weight class and OGURA Shota (4th year, School of Engineering) in the men's 53kg weight class won the individual division, and in the team division, after a fierce battle with strong schools, they won the second place.
Ms. Fujii said, "I am very happy to have won the first place individually in my last national competition as a fourth-year student. I had a fever a week ago and had to try it just after recovering from illness, but thanks to the encouragement and consideration of the club members, coaches, and OBs, I was able to take on the challenge with confidence.” Mr. Ogura said, "I don't think I could have achieved my goal of first place by myself. I feel that it was thanks to the support of so many people, including my seniors who worked as seconds, my coaches who taught me on a daily basis, my club members who worked hard together until the competition, and my family who supported me in my daily life. In addition, the experience of making systematic efforts to lose weight not only for the competition itself but also for the Kansai competition was very meaningful, and I would like to make use of this experience in my future working life and give back to my juniors as well. Thank you very much."
Captain HAMAGUCHI Taiki (4th year, School of Letters) said, "Although we were one step short of our goal of winning the overall championship, I think we were able to bring out all the strength that all of us have, and we were able to win the second place in the team competition and hold the tournament. All of the athletes who participated in this competition started powerlifting as university students and have achieved results in national competitions. It is never too late to start anything. We have many students in Okayama University weight training club who have no experience in sports until high school. Come train with us! We are looking forward to training with you!
