How was the dream Izumo Ekiden? The Track and Field Club made its debut in Izumo!

October 28, 2024

On October 14, Okayama University's Track and Field Club made its first appearance at the 36th Izumo All-Japan University Ekiden, held in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture! This race started at the Izumo Taisha, where Japan's eight million gods are said to gather, and covered a total distance of 45.1 km over six legs, with 21 teams racing to the Izumo Dome.

In the first leg, ISHINABE Souichi (4th year, Dental School), who had mentioned before the race, "I want to show the Okayama University uniform on the relay as long as possible," was seen running at the front of the pack. In the fifth leg, AKAZAWA Kyoya (3rd year, School of Engineering) finished in 10th place for his section, managing to make up ground and move the team up one position in both the fifth and sixth legs. The team finished in 17th place overall.

Along the course, Okayama University's cheerleading team and the brass band performed songs such as the children's song "Momotaro" to cheer on the athletes. Many members of the Track and Field Club and local alumni also showed their support at various points. Additionally, there were supporters holding Okayama University cheer sports towels, which were given as rewards in the crowdfunding campaign for this event, cheering on the athletes and boosting their spirits.

While the team didn’t reach their goals of finishing within the top 13 or as the highest-ranked national university, the smiles of satisfaction at the finish line reflected their achievements. They brought courage and inspiration to alumni and those who supported the crowdfunding campaign. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Track and Field Club’s founding, and they made their debut in the Izumo Ekiden. On November 3, they will also compete in the All-Japan Ekiden for the first time. The athletes will continue running toward their slogan for this year, "To become a regular contender nationwide!"
