On April 30, the Organization for Research and Innovation Strategy at Okayama University hosted the “Okayama University DS Club × UTokyo-based Startup Collaboration Event (Business × Academia)” at the Okayama Visionary Commons (OUX). Co-organized with the “Okayama digital Innovation Starting platform (OI-Start)” as part of the Regional Core University Innovation Creation Enhancement Project, the event attracted around 100 participants, including students, faculty, and staff interested in AI, startups, and regional innovation. The venue was filled with energy and enthusiasm.
The opening session featured Mr. OGAWA Ryoto, Representative Director and Co-CEO of 2WINS Inc., a startup originating from the Matsuo Laboratory at The University of Tokyo. Co-CEO Ogawa emphasized that “research results only gain value when applied to the real world,” and shared the story of how he translated his research into a business using AI technology. He also encouraged the audience by stating, “Let’s create a wave of innovation from here in Okayama to the world,” strongly advocating for the potential of region-based innovation.
Also speaking at the event was Mr. OHNISHI Ippei (Doctoral Course, 1st year, Graduate School of Environmental, Life, and Natural Sciences and Technology), CEO of Acaridge, a venture launched from Okayama University. He introduced his platform, which is designed to “connect researchers and students” with the aim of returning research outcomes to society. The initiative promotes early student involvement in research to support both research acceleration and career development.
Mr. KUMAGAI Sou (Doctoral Course, 2nd year, Graduate School of Environmental, Life, and Natural Sciences and Technology), a member of the Okayama University DS (Data Science) Club, presented the club’s student-led activities focused on learning and applying cutting-edge technologies. He discussed the club’s future prospects through examples of collaborative projects with other universities and companies.
During the panel discussion, Co-CEO Ogawa, Mr. Ohnishi, and Mr. Kumagai were joined by Mr. SEKINO Yudai, Executive Officer at 2WINS Inc. Together, they held an engaging discussion on themes such as “Student Entrepreneurship,” “Social Implementation of AI Technology,” and “Global Expansion.” Students in the audience actively participated with questions, showing a strong awareness of how to apply university learning to real-world issues.
In the second half of the event, a corporate exhibition and networking session took place. Participants and corporate representatives actively exchanged information on the latest technologies and career paths, providing students with valuable opportunities for practical learning and building professional networks.
Okayama University will continue to offer hands-on learning environments that support student challenges and foster human resources capable of connecting local communities with the global stage.
