Okayama University Delivers Reconstruction Support Donations to Earthquake-Affected Areas in Myanmar

June 10, 2025

We would like to express our heartfelt sympathy to all those affected by the earthquake that struck the Sagaing and Mandalay regions of Myanmar on March 28.

On May 24, as part of our support for the affected areas, Okayama University delivered a total of 1,588 USD — comprising donations from voluntary contributions by university faculty and staff, as well as relief funds from the Kakushokai (Okayama University Medical School Alumni Association) — to the Myanmar-Japan Alliance Business Association (MABA: JICA Myanmar Japan Center Upper Myanmar Alumni Association), which has been conducting volunteer support activities in the disaster-stricken regions. Ms. TORIGOE Asami, Coordinator at the International Affairs Division, Institutional Planning Department, and Dr. OKADA Shigeru, President of the Myanmar-Japan Collaboration Project for Fostering Medical Human Resources (MJCP) and Professor Emeritus at Okayama University, who also contributed to the donation, visited the site and handed the funds to Mr. Nay Linn, President of MABA.

Since the day following the earthquake, MABA has been providing emergency medical support and distributing daily necessities to those affected. In addition, it has supported the activities of the Japanese Government’s medical team in the region. Looking ahead, MABA is planning further support activities, such as the installation of water purifiers in the affected areas.

This donation to MABA was made possible thanks to the close collaboration between Okayama University and MABA under the “Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan” (entrusted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan), through which the Okayama University Japan Education Information Center (OJEIC) Mandalay Office was established in a building owned by MABA. As the building was damaged by the earthquake, MABA and the OJEIC Mandalay Office have temporarily relocated to another site.

We would like to once again express our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to this donation and extend our prayers for the swift recovery of the disaster-affected areas.
