September 01, 2016

Ms. Maya Kawakami, a fourth year student at Okayama University’s Faculty of Letters, attended the 2016 MODEL APEC Conference (Promoting APEC Youth Leadership and Entrepreneurship Side Event of the 6th APEC Educational Ministerial Meeting), held on August 25 to 28 in Beijing, People’s Republic of China, where she represented Japan.

This conference was modeled after the APEC Education Ministers’ Meeting, with the goal of having students in the Asia-Pacific region unite and cooperate as the next generation of leaders. Three students were selected to participate as the Japanese delegates. During the four-day program, the participants took part in discussions with actual Ministers’ Meeting themes such as capacity development for educational curricula and innovation and employment of science and technology, and held workshops on topics such as improving leadership and giving women play active roles.

Ms. Kawakami said, “The more the participants from the various countries expressed their different views, the more difficulties we encountered trying to aim for unified goals, and we had to reconsider what we should aim for in international cooperation. I found the other students representing Japan and the students from other countries with whom we participated highly stimulating, and the conference to be a productive four days.

The Japanese Delegates earned an outstanding performance award on the title of “An Ideal Educational Institution for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”
