【講演概要】In this talk I will address the following question, How to achieve an accurate and unified theory of cognition? And in doing so we explore the rationale for why biology has not yet attained the same status as physics in terms of rigour and predictability. We are living times of big technical advances in measurement and of detailed explanation at the cellular and molecular level. Nevertheless, the global picture of brain functioning is still missing. I claim for a shift towards a science of complexity able to deal with complex structures like human brains and their functioning. The complex sciences promote the use of mathematical theories ? dynamical system theory, category theory, topology, control theory, graph theory, stochastic processes or information theory -able to model the brain as a complex hierarchy of interconnected and nonlinear subsystems. The main objective is the consolidation of a theoretical foundation for cognitive science based on mathematical structures to enable the transition of cognitive science from its current heterogeneous state into a rigorous, systematic and convergent scientific endeavour.
