The History of the Commission
The IGU Commission on 'The Sustainability of Rural Systems' was approved at the International Geographical Commission meeting in The Hague in August 1996, replacing the Study Group of the same name that had functioned from 1992 to 1996. The CSRS holds annual meetings, each year in a different country.
Dr. Ian Bowler of the Geography Department, University of Leicester, U.K., was chair of the Study Group from 1992 to 1996, and Chair of the Commission from 1996 to 2000. In August, 2000, Dr. Chris Bryant took over as chair of the Commission.
Dr. Chris Bryant passed on the Chair of the Commission to a new Joint Chair in September, 2006: Dr. Ana Maria de S M Bicalho (Brasil) and Dr. Lucette Laurens (France)
Dr. Ana Firmino(Portugal) and Dr. Doo-Chul Kim took over as Co-chairs of the Commission in August, 2012.

La Commission de l'UGI sur 'Le développement durable des systèmes ruraux' fut approuvée au congrès de l'Union Géographique Internationale à La Haye au mois d'août 1996. Elle remplace le Groupe d'études du même nom qui a fonctionné de 1992 à 1996.
Dr. Ian Bowler du Département de Géographie, Université de Leicester, R.-U., fut président du Groupe d'Études de 1992 jusqu'à 1996, et président de la Commission de 1996 jusqu'à 2000. Au mois d'août 2000, le Professeur Chris Bryant a assumé la présidence de la Commission.
Dr. Chris Bryant a transféré la présidence de la Commission à une nouvelle présidence conjointe en septembre 2006: Dr. Ana Maria de S M Bicalho (Brésil) et Dr. Lucette Laurens (France).
