In Japan, tattoos are associated in most people’s minds with the criminal underworld. Having a tattoo can get you banned from public beaches, hot-springs baths and gyms, and may impact your ability to get a job. But has this always been true?
American journalist Alice Gordenker will give us a special screening of her documentary, "Horimono: Japan's Tattoo Pilgrimage," a short film that challenges Japanese stereotypes about tattoos.
Ms. Gordenker will discuss the making of the film and the history of tattoos in Japan, including their deep connection with ukiyo-e woodblock prints. She will delve into the surprising process through which tattoos came to be thought of as the mark of gangsters.
This session is an opportunity to think about how we know what we think we know, and how the media and unconscious biases can affect what we believe about other people.
