SDG 14 aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources. To this end, education/research of marine biology and cooperation by many fields are urgently required. Worldwide systematization of marine biological research by networks of marine stations is about to begin.

　On the other hand, Japan is an island country located in the Pacific Ocean of East Asia. The ocean surrounding this country is affected by several unique currents and by seafloor topography with several trenches and troughs. These situations bring richness and diversity in fauna and flora. From 1886, many marine biological stations were founded in Japan for education and research in marine biology.

　Thus, Ushimado Marine Institute (UMI) of Okayama University is promoting the marine biology and global (interdisciplinary and international) networks as a chair of the Directors-Council of the Japanese national marine and inland water biological stations.
