Understanding the significance of Dust and Sand Storm (DSS) issue as a major environmental challenge throughout Northeast Asia, the Ministers of Japan, China and Korea agreed to launch cooperative research activities on DSS prevention under the framework of Tripartite Environmental Ministers Meeting (TEMM) in 2007.

Based on integrating knowledge of both reactive and proactive approaches of past good practices in source area for DSS prevention, the tripartite research team started to evaluate degradation process and its effects on DSS and to develop new measures for restoration of degraded land.

Long-term joint field survey in Hulunbeier, China contributed to assessing the effects of new DSS countermeasures on vegetation restoration in degraded ecosystem. Cooperative data sharing of Lidar, PM10 contents and meteorological data for nominated DSS case study improved accuracy of DSS forecasting and developed early warning system (EWS) for DSS.
Results of these researches contribute on the technical lecture for capacity development in DSS source area and on the DSS forecast by Meteorological Agency of leeward countries.
