Okayama University Signs Cooperation Agreement with un.deux Co., Ltd., Pledging to Contribute to the Achievement of the SDGs through Ethical Fashion

April 23, 2021

On April 22, Okayama University signed a cooperation agreement with un.deux Co., Ltd.,* (hereafter un.deux) with the aim of contributing to the achievement of the SDGs through joint research and human resource development focused on ethical fashion. In recent years, the concept of ethical consumption has spread, and more emphasis is being placed on “ethical fashion” in the apparel industry as well. Ethical fashion promotes ethical and sustainable sourcing, manufacturing, and retail processes that reduce harm to the environment, while also considering the working conditions of garment makers and other social issues. un.deux strives to contribute to the community by actively working towards the SDGs and spreading the concept of ethical fashion. It has partnered with Okayama University at this time because of the university’s ongoing promotion of SDGs research.

Based on this agreement, Okayama University and un.deux will conduct joint research to quantify the potential for eco-materials to reduce the environmental impact of garment-production processes and to verify the safety of eco-materials. Additionally, an ideathon will take place to encourage exchange ideas between young un.deux developers and Okayama University students as members of the “next generation” regarding new products and distribution channels in the ethical fashion industry.

At the signing ceremony, Okayama University President MAKINO Hirofumi and un.deux CEO and President NAKAMURA Jiro signed the agreement. Afterwards, President Makino commented, "By participating in the promotion of ethical fashion, Okayama University hopes that students will see the SDGs as something that is relevant to their own live. It is also my hope that this venture will solidify Okayama Prefecture’s position as an SDG pioneer.” President Nakamura added, "Through joint research and interaction with Okayama University students, un.deux hopes to spread ethical fashion and contribute to the achievement of the SDGs and regional revitalization by providing safe, secure, and comfortable ethical products to society."
