November 22, 2023

On November 5, five members of the Shorinji Kempo Club participated in the 57th All Japan Student Championship of Shorinji Kempo held at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. The tournament featured representatives from universities across the country, with only one slot available for each event. Participants competed in various categories, including individual demonstrations, paired demonstrations, three-person team matches, group demonstrations, and witness evaluation matches.

Representing Okayama University's Shorinji Kempo Club, the following students competed: TAKEDA Ren (2nd year, School of Economics) and EMOTO Mariko (2nd year, Faculty of Law) in the paired demonstration category for both male and female brown belt participants, YAMAOKA Keisuke (2nd year, School of Engineering) and KAWAKAMI Rikuto (2nd year, School of Economics) in the paired demonstration category for male brown belt participants, and HIRAOKA Miu (2nd year, Faculty of Law) in the individual demonstration category for those without a specific level. The paired demonstration team of Mr.Takeda and Ms.Emoto achieved a ranking of 12th in their category.

After the tournament, Ms. Hiraoka expressed, "I had no previous experience in martial arts, but I started Shorinji Kempo because I wanted to become stronger. I never imagined that I, with no martial arts background, would be able to perform in front of martial artists from across the country when I first joined. The fact that I could stand on the stage of the All Japan Student Championships is solely thanks to the coach, senior members, alumni, all the club members, university staff, family, and everyone who supported me. With gratitude towards everyone around me, I was able to fully enjoy and give my best in the performance. I would like to pass on this experience to the next generation."
