Karate Club Achieves Long-Awaited Victory! Wins First National Title in 54 Years at the National Public University Karate Championship

December 04, 2024

On November 24, Okayama University's Karate Club competed in the 45th National Public University Karate Championship held at Osaka University’s Suita campus, where the men's team kumite (sparring) event resulted in a spectacular victory! This win marks the club’s first national title in 54 years and their fourth overall, with this being their first top finish in 38 years. The team made a remarkable leap forward from last year’s top-eight finish.

A total of 48 national public universities from across Japan participated in the tournament, where team events were held in a knockout format. The Karate Club triumphed in the final match against Osaka University, which had defeated them in the previous year’s competition, and claimed the championship. Additionally, this tournament held special significance as it was the retirement match for the 73rd batch of seniors in the club, making it an even more emotional and meaningful event for the members.

Fueled by the frustration of last year’s loss, the club members united in their efforts and dedicated themselves to rigorous practice, ultimately securing this long-awaited victory. We look forward to their continued success in the future!
