On December 15, Vice President Prof. Atsufumi Yokoi, UNESCO Chairholder of Okayama University, met with Dr. Fanta Aw, President and CEO of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the world’s largest international education association headquartered in Washington, D.C., United States. The two leaders exchanged views on the future of higher education and its role in contributing to the well-being of humanity and the planet.
Against the backdrop of a rapidly changing international environment, the discussion emphasized the importance of redefining the purpose of higher education as service to humanity and the planet. Both parties shared the view that equity, empathy, and human dignity should be placed at the center of education. They also highlighted the need to approach emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, with careful consideration of their social and cultural implications to ensure that technological advancement contributes to human and societal well-being.
The dialogue further explored models of universities that move beyond competition-driven frameworks toward collaboration and solidarity. It was recognized that embedding ethical values into institutional systems and decision-making structures is essential for realizing higher education that contributes to a more sustainable and inclusive society.
In addition, the two leaders exchanged constructive views on strengthening student mobility between Japan and the United States. Discussions focused on expanding learning opportunities and deepening mutual understanding, including reference to initiatives such as the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, in which Okayama University plays an active role. Concrete perspectives were shared on how to further develop sustainable and impactful student exchange programs.
Okayama University will continue to collaborate with international partners, including NAFSA, to co-create a desirable future for both the region and the planet through global engagement.
