Okayama University Hosts “Environment & Energy” Symposium

June 19, 2012

The Okayama University Environmental Management Center hosted a symposium on June 16 in the 50th Anniversary Hall entitled “Energy and the Environment: Aiming for a Society with Sustainable Use of Resources.” Approximately 190 participants consisting of students and citizens came together to think about lifestyles and how to make use of renewable energy.
Michihiro Miyake, director of the Environmental Management Center gave a speech, which was followed by a presentation by Prof. Hideki Ishida of the Tohoku University Graduate School of Environmental Studies on “Living a More Enriching Life: A New Wave of Lifestyles and Technologies.” His talk focused on the importance of leveraging natural and technological creation systems to establish new styles of creative manufacturing and new lifestyles. The audience heard presentations from three representatives of the corporate community about a range of futuristic technologies, including case studies of successes with cars powered by fuel cells, solar power generation, and biomass fuel.
The speeches were followed by a panel discussion facilitated by Mr. Miyake and featuring a total of four panelists, including Prof. Ishida. There was lively debate—including audience participation—on ways of using renewable energy and the event went some way to raising general awareness of environmental issues.
