Major Jump in Interest in Okayama University’s Natural Science Thesis over the Decade

August 30, 2012

On August 3 the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP) published its “University Research Benchmarking Series Benchmarking Research & Development Capacity of Japanese Universities 2011,” summarizing such facts as the rate of growth in the number of natural science thesis. Our university was cited as having a high growth rate over the last decade in an analysis of high-profile much-quoted thesis (the number of top 10% thesis).
The analysis concentrated on 128 universities in Japan that generated over a thousand thesis in the ten years between 2002 and 2011. A comparison of the number of thesis and number of top 10% thesis was made for the periods 1997-2001 and 2007-2011. The report stated that the number of top 10% thesis for Okayama University was 380.9 over 1997-2001 and 681.9 over 2007-11, showing a powerful growth rate of 79%, and introduced alongside Waseda (119% increase), Tsukuba (63% increase), and Keio (54%).
The report also analyzed a global ranking of the top 50 universities by the number of quotes in comparatively detailed research field subject categories. Our university was included as an example of a smaller-sized university ranking with the major national universities and was described as "carrying out research at world-class level in special categories."
