Director Yamamoto Visits India’s National Research Centers and Collaborative Research Center in India

December 19, 2012

Executive Director (Research) Dr. Shinichi Yamamato and a party of four others on December 2 journeyed to Kolkata in the state of West Bengal, India to visit or pay courtesy calls on the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED), the I.D. & B.G. Hospital, the University of Calcutta, and also visited Collaborative Research Center of Okayama University for Infectious Diseases in India (center director: Dr. Sumio Shinoda, specially appointed / honorary professor).

Okayama University established this center, the only Japanese research institute for infectious diseases for India, in 2007, and currently three researchers and one administrative employee have been sent there to work with researchers in India. This observational visit was made as part of a strong engagement in winning the war against enteric diseases such as cholera, which still take many lives in India.

Dr. Yamamoto's party visited NICED, hospitals and universities, observing at first hand the state of treatment for and research on infectious diseases in India through talking to those directly involved. A joint seminar was held with NICED and Okayama University, with a discussion on how to strengthen coordination in future research. This visit to the center also lent encouragement to maximizing networks inside India to further research promotion.
