“International Student Shared House” Completed

May 11, 2016

The completion ceremony for an “International Student Shared House” was held at Okayama University on March 24, 2016.

The purpose of the housing is to have international students and Japanese students live together while studying at Okayama University. It is hoped that this will foster human resources capable of playing an active role on the global stage by having the students come into contact with the languages, cultures and daily customs of people from other countries in their daily lives. The residence, a reinforced concrete building with five floors, contains 30 units with a capacity of 120 students (90 international students and 30 Japanese students). Each unit consists of individual rooms for each student. Four students will live together in each unit, which is designed to enable the students to intermingle with each other in a natural way during their daily lives.

The ceremony was attended by about 50 people, including President Kiyoshi Morita, university directors and other university officials. In a greeting to the attendees, President Morita said, “I believe that encouraging mutual understanding, nurturing an international sensibility and widening one’s horizons through international students and Japanese students engaging in communal living will contribute to the further development of our international exchange activities and the internationalization of Okayama University as a whole.” A ribbon-cutting ceremony was then held to celebrate the completion of the share house.

The Center for Global Partnerships and Education will make good use of the “International Student Shared House” and the existing international dormitories to promote active student exchanges as Okayama University moves toward the globalization of the university and the attainment of the target student dispatch and acceptance numbers specified by the Top Global University Project.
