Delegates from Myanmar’s Assembly of the Union visit Okayama University

May 30, 2016

On May 11, 2016, a delegation from Myanmar to promote ties with Japan, comprised of seven legislators, visited Okayama University to request human resource development assistance. The university has been providing such support in the field of medicine for many years.

During the visit, President Kiyoshi Morita explained the history of the Project for Human Resources Development sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and JICA, including Okayama University’s experiences over about 20 years in providing human resource development assistance to Myanmar in the field of medicine. He said, “I hope that this will lead to further exchange between Japan and Myanmar and the future development of these ties.”

Dr. Tin Aung (Chairman of Education Development Committee), who led the delegation, said, “Providing education to the people and improving standards are priority issues for my country, and we also need vocational training. To date, Okayama University has had the experience of welcoming many students from Myanmar, and we hope to continue to support human resource development in Myanmar in the medical field as well as other areas.”

After learning about the university’s Myanmar Project for Human Resources Development, the delegates visited the Faculty of Engineering’s Nanodevice and Materials Laboratory, which has many students from Myanmar. They discussed the topic of graduate school education with Prof. Yasuhiko Hayashi, after which they visited the Division of Biochemistry of the Medical School’s Department of Neuroscience and met with Prof. Koji Takei.

Okayama University is in charge of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Study in Japan Coordinator Project (Myanmar) and welcomes many students from Myanmar each year. On March 11, 2016, the university played a key role in the establishment of the Myanmar-Japan Platform for Human Resource Development, an active initiative with the aim of furthering human resource development in Myanmar through a Japan-wide framework that brings together many universities, corporations and various ministries and government offices.
