The 4th Nano-functional Material Seminar “Transformation Electromagnetics”

On 18 August 2015, Atsushi Ishikawa, Assistant Professor at Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology (Engineering), Okayama University, organized the 4th Nano Functional Seminar at Okayama University to discuss new science and technology related to nano functional materials.

At the seminar, Atsushi Sanada, Professor at Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Yamaguchi University, gave a lecture entailed “Transformation Electromagnetics” to discuss how to make an object invisible, so-called “an invisibility cloak”, with metamaterials.

Einstein’s theory of general relativity predicts the space around planets or black holes is distorted by the effect of their heavy gravity. In such a unique space, starlight is deflected by following the distortion of the space, known as gravitational lens effect. Professor Sanada presented Maxwell equations describing the light propagation can be maintained for any type of the distortion, once the space distortion is translated into its electromagnetic properties. Such a new concept to manipulate the light propagation, i.e., Transformation Electromagnetics, realizes an invisibility cloak and the system can be technically implemented by using the metamaterials, an artificial material made of sub-wavelength metallodielectric structures, Professor Sanada discussed.

The series of Nano Functional Seminar have been regularly held under the support of Okayama University to promote interdisciplinary fields research.
