University of Ottawa Delegation Visits Okayama University’s Shikata Campus

On May 27, a delegation from the University of Ottawa visited Okayama University’s Shikata Campus, where they toured Okayama University Hospital, met with university representatives, and visited several campus facilities.

Okayama University and the University of Ottawa have built a strong partnership over many years in the fields of research and education related to women’s health. This collaboration has developed through close academic ties between Professor MASUYAMA Hisashi of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Professor Benjamin K. Tsang of the University of Ottawa, who was among the members of the visiting delegation.

The visit began with a tour of Okayama University Hospital, where the delegation observed key facilities, including operating rooms, the Interventional Radiology (IVR) Center, and the Perinatal Medical Center . Delegation members showed strong interest in advanced medical care, state-of-the-art medical equipment, and patient support systems at Japanese university hospitals, leading to active discussions with Okayama University faculty and staff.

The delegation subsequently met with Executive Director (Medical Affairs) and Hospital Director MAEDA Yoshinobu and Dean of the Medical School WADA Jun. During the meeting, participants exchanged views on medical education, research activities, and international initiatives at their respective institutions. Discussions also covered opportunities for student exchange, researcher collaboration, and the possibility of future institutional agreements, highlighting shared expectations for further strengthening ties between the two universities.

The visitors also toured several facilities on the Shikata Campus, including the Medical Museum. There, they learned about the history of Okayama University’s Medical School and its longstanding contributions to medical education and research.

In addition, the delegation visited the Laboratory of Tumor Microenvironmentology, which has ongoing academic connections with the field of obstetrics and gynecology. Professor TOGASHI Yosuke of the Institute for Emerging Medical Innovation introduced the laboratory’s research activities and facilities. The delegation expressed strong interest in the university’s cutting-edge research initiatives and international collaborative projects.

The following day, May 28, the delegation visited the Tsushima Campus, where they paid a courtesy visit to President NASU Yasutomo and participated in the University of Ottawa – Okayama University Information Exchange Session at the Knowledge and Innovation Building with Integrated Networks in Okayama through Vibrant Exchange (KIBINOVE).

This visit further deepened the relationship between the two institutions and is expected to contribute to the continued development of international collaboration in education and research.
