Degree Policy of School of Environmental Science and Technology

Faculty of Environmental Science and Technology

The Faculty of Environmental Science and Technology educates students to have the ability to deal with environmental problems that expand on a global scale. Students will also acquire a wide range of interdisciplinary knowledge in order to build a sustainable society, and create a rich and comfortable environment in which nature and people are in harmony.
Based on this philosophy, the Diploma Policy of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Technology guarantees that students will have acquired the appropriate abilities when graduating from the faculty.

Education combined with a sense of humanity and insight 【General Education】

The students will be interested in various issues such as the harmony between human society and the natural world, have a logical and clear judgement for problem solving. They will also aquire creativity not bound by conventional thinking and methods and an interdisciplinary knowledge supported by an understanding of humanity and ethics.

Expertise supported by abundant knowledge【Expertise】

The students will acquire knowledge and skills in specialized fields, and a wide range of subjects beyond their specialized fields. Thereby, they will be able to address environmental issues from a multifaceted perspective.

Ability to collect and disseminate information for problem solving【Ability to Use Information】

Having considered environmental problems in depth, they will have the ability to gather and analyze information by themselves. They will also be able to use the information for problem solving and effectively disseminate it.

Communication skills and the ability to act using the skills 【Ability to Act and Communication skills】

Along with an international awareness and an ability to use foreign languages, they will have communication skills which enable interdisciplinary cooperation in various specialized fields. They will also be able to act appropriately to solve environmental problems from a local to global scale.

They will further enhance their daily lives. As autonomous individuals, they will learn independently and continuously throughout their lifetimes, and pursue their own growth while making efforts to realize a sustainable society.

Department of Environmental and Mathematical Sciences

Analysis of various phenomena related to the environment is indispensable for human beings to harmonize with nature and to sustain a rich environment. For that purpose, students need to acquire not only an understanding of a problem, but also understand the theory and techniques for analysis. At the Department of Environmental and Mathematical Sciences, we develop human resources such as researchers and engineers who have the solid foundation in mathematics, statistics and computational science necessary for phenomena analysis, and a wide range of application abilities. Based on this philosophy, the Diploma Policy of the Department of Environmental and Mathematical Sciences guarantees that students will have acquired the following abilities when graduating from the faculty.

Relationship between a good education and society【General Education】

Students will acquire a wide range of knowledge concerning natural science, social science and humanities. This well-rounded education will be supported by human nature and the ability to think from many viewpoints. Students will also acquire the ability to think about the influence of science and technology on society and nature.

Foundations and knowledge in the Major【Expertise 1】

Students will have solid foundations and extensive knowledge of mathematical science, natural science, environmental science, etc. for their major.

Mathematical science theory (Mathematics)【Expertise 2】

Students will learn mathematical theories for the analysis of partial differential equations and dynamical systems, probabilistic theory including combination probability, algebra such as group theory and ring theory, geometry of distance space and complexes, etc.

Mathematical science theory (Computational Science)【Expertise 3】

Students will learn the theory and methods related to programming, numerical analysis, computer simulations, visualization, etc. necessary for efficiently and effectively using computers.

Mathematical science theory (Statistics)【Expertise 4】

Students will acquire knowledge of mathematical statistics, computational statistics, multivariate analysis and other theories of statistics.

Application of mathematical science【Expertise 5】

Students will acquire the methods to apply mathematical science theory to various problems such as environmental issues.

Ability of solving problems and information-gathering【Ability to Use Information】

Students will acquire the ability to discover and set problems based on expert knowledge, to analyze the problems using mathematical methods, and to summarize the information in a paper. They will also acquire the ability to collect and analyze information for solving problems and to accurately disseminate this information.

Communication skills and the ability to use them【Ability to Act and Communicative Skill】

Students will acquire the ability to properly construct their thoughts logically and to accurately communicate them. They will also acquire an ability to communicate on an international level and make use of it for the development of global society.

Ability to continuously learn and self-realize throughout life【Ability to Learn over Lifetime and Ability to Achieve Self-realization】

Students will acquire the ability for self-development throughout their life by voluntary and continuous learning, through analysis, field surveys, preparation of thesis and graduation thesis etc.

Department of Environmental and Civil Engineering

The Department of Environmental and Civil engineering aspires to construct a secure and sustainable society in which people can live in peace of mind. We educate civil engineers to take the environment into consideration when constructing infrastructures, and also educate environmental engineers who are familiar with the fieled of civil engineering.
The diploma policy of this department based on this idea guarantees students will have acquired the following abilities when they graduate.

Engineering ethics and knowledge 【General Education 1】

Encourage harmony between human society and the natural world by observing the ethical standards of environmental scientists.

Fundamental ability in mathematics and natural sciences【General Education 2】

Students will gain knowledge of natural sciences and application ability in addition to logical thinking skills and judgment.

Fundamental knowledge of civil engineering and environmental engineering 【Expertise 1】

Students will be able to contribute to the development of human society from multiple perspectives using the knowledge and skills gained in the field of the environment and civil engineering.

Ability to recognize and solve issues 【Expertise 2】

Students will be able to recognize issues concerning the sustainable development of society and accurately find ways to solve them.

Ability to analyze and solve problems 【Information Collecting Ability】

Students will be able to collect and analyze information for each task and draw appropriate conclusions based on it.

Students will be able to accurately communicate their thoughts to other people. They will also create good relationships by carefully listening to others' opinions.

Department of Environmental Management Engineering

In this department, we teach in depth concerning the appropriate management of the natural environment and the sustainable use of resources both from a natural and social scientific point of view. In this way, we develop human resources which have sufficient knowledge and understanding of theories and techniques to create/manage a place where there is harmony between human activities and the natural environment.
The Diploma Policy based on this philosophy sets the following goals for students to attain by the time they graduate.

Our students will be able to understand and explain about culture, society, social order, people's relationships with nature on Earth, and various environmental issues at the local and global level. Furthermore students will acquire an interdisciplinary general education supported by ethical thinking.

Our students will be able to tackle environmental problems from a multifaceted perspective by acquiring a wide range of knowledge, skills, and a much deeper insight into natural and social science relating to water, soil, living creatures and rural society.

Our students will be able to not only carefully consider environmental and community issues but also collect, analyze and correctly use the information on their own for problem solving, then effectively disseminate it.

Our students will obtain the necessary language skills to work internationally and the communication skills to cooperate in various specialized fields, and also will be able to solve environmental issues ranging from the local to global scale.

Department of Environmental Chemistry and Materials

In the Department of Environmental Chemistry and Materials, we educate students to try to contribute to developing a good environment by deepening their understanding of substance transformation and energy change, creating new chemical materials with excellent functions, and creating new chemical processes for the effective utilization of resources and energy.
Based on this philosophy, the diploma policy of the Department of Environmental Chemistry and Materials guarantees that students will have acquired the following abilities before graduating from this department.

Ability to understand co-exist with nature【General Education 1】

Students will have a broad perspective and social awareness, enabling them to consider environmental and energy problems as issues of a symbiosis of nature and human society.

Ability to maintain a sense of professional ethics and responsibility【General Education 2】

Students will understand their responsibility for society and citizens' lives, and their responsibility as chemical engineers deeply involved with nature. They will have the ability to recognize the importance of environmental concern and their ethical responsibility when converting materials and energy.

Basic knowledge and application for problem solving 【Expertise】

Students will learn mathematics, physics, and specialized basic knowledge: chemistry, material chemistry, chemical engineering. They will have the ability to apply the knowledge in order to solve environmental problems related to substances and energy.

Students will collect and analyze the information necessary for problem solving and have the ability to effectively transmit the findings obtained in order to contribute to the construction of a sustainable society.
