Furthermore, opportunities are created to learn medical English not only through regular coursework but also through extracurricular activities.
〔Specific Course Progression〕
The following outlines the specific approach to the “Educational Principles” for General Education, Specialized Education, and Language Education.
1st Year
In addition to general education courses covering foreign languages, research skills, information and mathematical data science, and liberal arts, students learn fundamental knowledge and skills common to each medical specialization through basic specialized courses within the professional curriculum. Furthermore, students study introductions to their respective specializations through specialized courses. Practical training through faculty guidance on understanding both the philosophy and practice of “team-based healthcare,” which is crucial for healthcare professionals, is also a required course. Moreover, throughout the four years starting from the first year, students engage in numerous interprofessional lectures and practical training sessions alongside students from other faculties departments, including Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
2nd Year
While continuing to study liberal arts courses, students take more courses in their major, including lectures, seminars, and laboratory work, to acquire foundational knowledge and skills in their respective majors. From the second year onward, lectures, seminars, and laboratory work increasingly incorporate learner-centered approaches, with more emphasis on Inquiry-based Learning.
3rd Year
Students begin taking more advanced courses in their major, and in many majors, clinical training at university hospitals and other institutions begins in earnest. Additionally, in several majors, seminars where students learn the basics of research under the guidance of a supervising professor start in the latter half of the third year. Moreover, during the 2nd to 4th years, opportunities are provided to take on long-term off-campus activities such as study abroad and internships, utilizing the four-term system.
4th Year
In parallel with practical training, students complete their graduation thesis in research labs assigned to them, working under the guidance of their supervising professors. Furthermore, in the common courses offered across medical-related faculties, students are provided with opportunities to learn about the latest developments and practices in healthcare from different perspectives than those encountered during clinical training, further enhancing their expertise. In the latter half of the fourth year, national examinations for the professional qualifications targeted by each major (such as nurses, public health nurses, radiologic technologists, clinical laboratory technologists, etc.) are held, and most students take the exams for the professions they aim to enter. The curriculum is designed to ensure that students are well-prepared to pass these national exams, reflecting the success of the university education provided.
