What is the Epilepsy Center?
There are reportedly approximately one million epilepsy patients in Japan. It is difficult for patients to decide what department they should visit. As a result, it might take a long time to find an epilepsy specialist. We have received requests for the establishment of an Epilepsy Center where epilepsy patients, irrespective of their age, can consult with specialists. At the Epilepsy Center, Departments of Child Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Psychiatry, and other related departments and divisions collaborate to provide advanced medical care. The Epilepsy Center receives referrals from Okayama and neighboring prefectures, determines diagnosis and treatment plan, and carries out epilepsy surgery and ketogenic diet therapy for patients with intractable epilepsy. At an initial visit, Department of Child Neurology takes care of patients younger than 18 years of age. Other departments take care of adults. An appointment can be made through the Regional Medical Liaison Office.
