The Department of Pediatric Cardiology primarily provides care for children with heart disease, including congenital heart disease, arrhythmias, and severe heart failure. We also offer specialized care for adults with complex congenital heart disease and endovascular treatment for vascular malformations in children. We welcome patients from our local Chugoku-Shikoku region as well as from across Japan. In close collaboration with related departments, we provide optimal medical care for patients and their families, from diagnosis through treatment.
Scope of Target Diseases
- Congenital Heart Disease
Patent ductus arteriosus, ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, pulmonary valve stenosis, atrioventricular septal defect, tetralogy of Fallot, complete transposition of the great arteries, total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, and single ventricle physiology, including hypoplastic left heart syndrome and tricuspid atresia.
- Pediatric Arrhythmias
Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, atrial tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, long QT syndrome, Brugada syndrome, atrioventricular block, and other arrhythmias.
- Acquired Heart Disease in Children
Coronary artery aneurysms after Kawasaki disease, acute myocarditis, dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, cardiac tumors, pulmonary hypertension, and cardiac involvement associated with other diseases.
- Pediatric Vascular Lesions
Pulmonary arteriovenous fistulae, portosystemic shunts, and other vascular lesions.
Features and Description of Medical Care
The Department of Pediatric Cardiology at Okayama University Hospital is one of Japan’s leading centers for the treatment of congenital heart disease and has among the highest levels of experience nationwide in catheter-based treatment for congenital heart disease.
In addition to transcatheter closure of atrial septal defects and patent ductus arteriosus in children, we provide a wide range of catheter interventions for complex congenital heart disease in both pediatric and adult patients, including balloon angioplasty for stenotic lesions and embolization therapy for abnormal vessels.
For transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation using the Harmony valve® in patients after repair of tetralogy of Fallot, our physicians also serve as proctors who provide guidance to physicians at other institutions. We therefore provide care based on a high level of expertise.
We also have extensive experience in electrophysiological studies and catheter ablation for arrhythmias, fetal diagnosis of congenital heart disease, and the diagnosis and treatment of fetal arrhythmias.
In addition, we manage coronary artery lesions after treatment-resistant Kawasaki disease, treat acute myocarditis, manage dilated and hypertrophic cardiomyopathies, and provide care for pulmonary hypertension and cardiac complications associated with other diseases, including neuromuscular disorders. In this way, we cover a broad range of pediatric cardiovascular diseases.
As a department within the Pediatric Medical Center of Okayama University Hospital, which serves as a final referral center for pediatric care, we are committed to providing high-quality specialized medical care to patients and their families.
